Fundamentally, we agree and believe that this feature is a requirement - being able to message people you've met in Hifi, whether or not they are online. I'm going to move this to planned. But we still are not sure what software to use, or how to staff the project. Thoughts welcome.
i really dont know much about coding. but i mean i dont think we are looking for something like discord we dont need to send each other egg plant emojis or files. all we really need is a chat app where we can message each other and send links. but again thats just my opinion.
I also added a forum thread on this topic.... https://forums.highfidelity.com/t/discussion-on-how-best-to-do-text-chat/15298/3
I see a group of people stood on a domain, one of my friends is there, but i dont know the rest. I want to check if its ok to drop in, I want to check that the troll isnt there b4 I go
Would it be better if we provided a mechanism whereby you could automatically share your username/credentials on your favorite chat service (Discord, etc) with the people that you become friends with in Hifi? It would seem that might be better than trying to re-create yet another messaging service?
@philip: would this work in vr
@philip: I would prefer not to mix my "outside" contacts with my "high fidelity" contacts just to send a message in high fidelity. To avoid reinventing the wheel, how about implementing an XMPP server that you could log into with your High Fidelity account, and then as resources become available add XMPP client capabilities to the interface?
To do this well is a HUGE amount of work - today's expectation as to features and quality will be to match Discord or Slack. For example, do you want infinite scrollback of the conversation? How about auto-complete? What about unpacking URL's and creating thumbnails? Highly customizeable notifications? If we do this well, we won't work on anything else for a long time. If we do it poorly? I guess that's the question. Do you want us to do something really minimal, for example "I can send Judas a message that pops up for a few secs as a notification on his screen"? Is that better than just having us all use Discord, like many people are already doing?
@philip plans to comment here :)
i dont know why this is not naturally part of the platform. i know Philip wants to minimize liability but this should be a basic feature added long ago. a voice chat should also be a feature wtf
